Purpose of Role

Reporting to the Vehicle Engineering Manager for the car line, the Vehicle Engineering Manager for variant programmes will lead the vehicle development function, dynamic attribute teams (Vehicle dynamics, NVH & Durability) and Certification teams to deliver the vehicle project requirements on time and on budget. 

The primary objectives are to ensure that the desired attributes and overall development plan are delivered in line with programme timing, to manage engineering issues and to achieve a robust engineering sign off through robust test and development.  

With direct line management responsibility for the Vehicle Development team and a matrix responsibility for the attribute and certification teams at a program level, the role requires a high level of interaction across all departments/levels of the business and the ability to guide the wider team through the resolution of engineering problems in order to achieve vehicle level engineering sign-off within program gateway timing.

Principal Accountabilities

Target definition:

·         Lead the development of targets for vehicle attributes in conjunction with the VLD, Programme Manager, Chief Engineer or Chief Programme Engineer and Attribute leaders, helping shape and influence new products

Attribute delivery: (With attribute teams/managers):

  • Work with the programme team to balance attribute targets with programme content, cost and timing. Ensure effective fleet management to support DVP and tuning activities.
  • Lead the vehicle engineering teams at a programme level to deliver attribute solutions to meet programme targets.
  • Ensure attribute concerns are closed within the timeframes dictated at each build phase of the programme and the closure plans support robust engineering gateway sign-off.
  • Lead vehicle sign-off events/evaluation drives with Directors and key programme stakeholders in line with gateway requirements to demonstrate attribute progression/milestones. Work with the wider PD team to define the content to be presented at each drive event. Ensure delivery of vehicle engineering attributes meet vehicle targets. Ensure gaps to target are visible and closure plans identified.
  • Collate and manage Certification & Attribute (NVH, Durability, Vehicle Dynamics) headcount/budget requirements and report back to the business at a programme level.
  • Manage the test and development budget across the attribute teams in order to balance programme content, costs & timing.
  • Support the resolution of attribute issues arising by co-ordinating with the broader engineering teams.
  • Develop whole vehicle test plans to demonstrate and validate functional and attribute performance meets design requirements and programme targets.
  • Optimise and validate individual Function/Attribute DVP's to ensure development and sign-off tests are valid, justified and meet programme key gateway timing.
  • Ensure the Prototype build timing, vehicle quantities and specifications support programme requirements for DVP testing, development and engineering sign-off.
  • Lead the design of prototype builds including specifications and bridging parts and take part in regular design reviews to ensure prototypes are fit for purpose.
  • Ensure adequate test parts are ordered for all builds to support DVP requirements.
  • Deliver whole vehicle level test plans and support resolution of all issues arising by co-ordinating with the broader engineering teams.
  • Collate and manage Vehicle Development headcount/budget requirements and report back to the business at a programme level.

Design Verification Planning: (With Principal/Senior Development engineer):

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

·         Experience of managing cross functional teams.

·         Ability to apply detailed technical knowledge to the understanding of new technologies, development of engineering designs and resolution of engineering problems

·         Experience of vehicle embedded systems would be beneficial, notably:

o    Communication protocols (CAN, LIN etc.)

o    Diagnostics implementation and validation

o    Software architecture, ideally including use of the VECTOR tool chain.

o    Vehicle data logging, calibration and data analysis using INCA, Vector CANAPE or similar.

o    Vehicle powertrain and/or power-electrical simulations, particularly driveline, emissions and performance-analysis simulations (ideally in Matlab / Simulink)

·         Must be proficient with all common Microsoft Office applications including Project

Business Knowledge

·         Experience in an automotive test and development environment preferred.

·         Low volume, high performance vehicle programs

·         Experience of executing DVPs, FMEA

·         Hybrid/Electric Drive engineering

Essential Functional / Technical Skills

Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above
