Purpose of Role

Electronic Systems at McLaren Automotive are a key element characterising the performance and attributes of our cars. The features and applications we develop are fundamental to the performance of the vehicles and are highly influential to our customers perception of the quality of our products.

With Artura, McLaren Automotive has introduced a brand new high-performance Zonal Electrical and Electronic Architecture, embedding cutting-edge technologies such as Ethernet backbone, Over-The-Air software update, Cybersecurity and AUTOSAR.

The McLaren E/E Architecture is designed to host complex electronic systems, such as Hybrid Powertrain systems, fine Chassis controls, luxury Body/Comfort systems, advanced HMI, state-of-the-art ADAS and Connectivity systems.

The S&A Technical Programme Engineer oversees the successfully delivery of the E/E hardware and software Architecture of McLaren Automotive vehicles.

With visibility and accountability for the function and performance of all systems and platforms on a small to medium sized vehicle programme, the S&A Technical Programme Engineer is responsible for bringing together the design and implementation of the distributed functionality.

Supporting the Programme Management team to ensure that the Feature Implementation Plan is met on time, and technical challenges are overcome to deliver the attributes required of such high-performance vehicles. The S&A Technical Programme Engineer is the point of contact with the programme supporting software from project inception to project delivery into manufacturing.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Define the feature implementation plan (FIP) with support from the programme management team.
  • Create the Software Platform plan for the programme & cascade requirements for feature implementation, software maturity & timing to the software engineers & module owners.  Ensure robust feedback on the feasibility of the plan from all stakeholders and that any dependencies (e.g., ARXML release / hardware / test property timing) are well understood.
  • Chair the weekly E/E architecture meeting to review and cascade technical programme developments with all stakeholders.
  • E/E System design lead for the vehicle.  Working with the E/E Systems Engineers for each domain, ensure that the systems are technically compatible across the vehicle & that the vehicle attribute requirements will be met.  Work with PREEvision team to ensure that ARXML release timing & content will support the software plan.
  • With support from TPMs, monitor functional implementation & timing to ensure each platform remains on track to the agreed software maturity & FIP.  Responsible to ensure that each platform is technically compatible, advising on the impact of any late / incomplete deliveries & finding a solution to support the customers of that platform.
  • Coordinate with Lead Validation Engineer to ensure stress testing and the relevant functional attributes are assessed at each milestone.

·       Work with the programme Lead Validation Engineer to identify key technical risks & priority fix tickets.  Actively monitor delivery of these key fixes into the next platform.   Create dashboards for critical platform issues and ensure their timely resolution.

  • Lead system level issue root cause analysis (from field, vehicle DVP, MPC & Aftersales), pulling cross-functional teams together to solve difficult issues.
  • Manage Software Change Requests - complete full impact analysis to identify required changes. Work with TPMs to agree the change & target implementation timing with the programme manager.
  • Act as a bridge between the technical team and upper management. Use technical knowledge to communicate technical complexities to non-technical stakeholders.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related field.
  • Strong problem-solving experience in automotive Software & Electronics, including data interrogation.
  • Automotive market trend knowledge and experience of project development (e.g. timing vs desired goal).
  • Knowledge of automotive communication protocols, Ethernet CAN, LIN.
  • Experience with project/issue tracking tools such as Mantis or Jira.
  • Experience with requirements management tools such as IBM Doors or Jama.
