The Uplift Workshop Lead is responsible for the timely inspection, preparation and completion of ex-internal-use McLaren cars for presentation and resale to the McLaren Retailer network. All cars must be prepared to the appropriate standard in order to achieve the budgeted Internal Fleet sales volume, revenue and profit.
This role is responsible for managing all aspects of the Uplift Fleet workshop from efficient and well-planned loading, to final inspection and sign-off of prepared cars. The role will require regular communication and planning across Sales, Aftersales, Production, Engineering, Logistics and the Press Fleet team, as well as external suppliers. Success in this role is dependent on effective management of the team of Technicians, Parts Operations, Engineers and suppliers.
- Plan the capacity and budget requirement of the workshop, ensuring appropriate resourcing to deliver the volume and standard of cars required by the internal Fleet operation
- Manage and improve a workshop delivery plan to precisely maintain and regularly report the status of all active and future planned work, ensuring accurate forecasting of start and end dates for wholesale planning
- Introduce workshop performance measurements to ensure the productivity, efficiency and utilisation of the workshop is maximised and that effective hours sold are measurable
- Define and develop process and policies to ensure the efficient and smooth operation of the workshop in fulfilling the vehicle volume requirement of the internal Fleet operation
- Define, implement and report on KPI’s of the workshop and parts operation to ensure Parts, Technician and Body and Paint activity are performing to target
- Ensure all vehicles have a job card created which includes all required labour operations, with parts demand identified and ordered, prior to work commencing
- Manage adherence to the Uplift Workshop budget and spend tracking, whilst ensuring vehicles are completed on time to facilitate delivery of the wholesale, revenue and profit targets of the team
- Manage the current team of Technicians, Parts Operatives and Engineer to ensure efficient processing and completion of vehicles against the agreed plan, with individuals’ performance reviewed and development supported
- Identify opportunity for and implement continuous process improvement across workshop loading, parts sourcing, cost saving, efficiency and quality to ensure cars are processed to the highest standard in the shortest time
- Implement quality control processes, adhered to by all Uplift Workshop team members to ensure all vehicles are received in and out of the workshop during build in a documented condition, with final despatch for resale signed off at the appropriate pre-owned sale standard
- Work with the Uplift Build Engineer to ensure the team is supplied with all pertinent information and build instructions ahead of vehicle reworks and support live build decision making when escalation is required
- Ensure the Material Controller and Warehouse Operatives are equipped and operating efficiently to provide Technicians with the right parts at the right time and at the most effective cost
- Manage a group of external Body and Paint providers to ensure sufficient capacity is always maintained, cars are processed to the required standard, and cost and quality is appropriate for the age and mileage of the car
- Lead the team by example with clear leadership and frequent communication, whilst demonstrating and encouraging exceptional operational standards
- Work closely with the Uplift Workshop team and the Prototype Build Manager to ensure a pro-active approach to Health and Safety, encouraging the team to highlight risk and report near-miss occurrence
- Ensure compliance with all mandatory Health and Safety procedures
- Ensure physical workshop space, parts and vehicle storage and logistics operations are maximised for efficiency and cost effectiveness and that the workshop is maintained to a high standard
- Experience running a workshop with a team of Technicians
- Experience running a parts department within a retailer operation or similar
- Experience in setting and delivering to monthly targets
- Familiarity with high performance and / or luxury vehicles is preferred
- Strong organisational skills with a process driven approach
- Appreciation of compliance and legislative standards required of vehicle manufactures in the sale of cars
- Demonstrable people management experience
- Strong IT skills and at ease with MS Office products including Excel.
