Purpose of Role

To design, engineer & deliver, from concept to series-development, Power Electronic (PE) components ensuring they fulfil all the programme requirements (cost, timing, performance / function / attributes). Power electronics in EDT includes Motor Control Units (or Inverters), DC/DC converters, Chargers and associated high voltage safety systems


Key Responsibilities:

  • Requirements and validation of the inverter
  • Requirements and validation of the DC/DC converter
  • Software requirements for the Motor controller, DC/DC Converter and Charger.
  • Interface to Battery systems and other HV components.
  • Interface to the overall vehicle control system
  • Detailed Power Electronics knowledge and experience  – includes attribute delivery/support, managing design releases, specifications, DVPs, DFMEAs, Engineering Quality Methodologies
  • Ownership and delivery
  • PE assembly planning and allocation
  • PE simulation (where required)
  • PE Supplier management
  • Design-focussed vehicle level meetings for PE integration
Principal Accountabilities

  • Guarantee PE integration and delivery to all vehicle projects– to specification, on time and on budget.
  • Understands and supports the package constraints for the PE units.  Working with PE suppliers, Concept teams & DMU to ensure PE components and systems meet technical and package targets and to deliver detailed designs on time to predetermined quality, cost and weight targets, within DFM requirements
  • Ensure design solutions deliver systems that meet attribute targets in NVH, thermal, durability, visibility & performance related attributes.
  • Working with Supply Chain Management to ensure delivery of the PE on schedule for all phases of prototype, pilot, pre-production and production build.
  • Preparation and presentation of material to support external and internal project status reviews
  • Provide support on PE technical risk management to ensure project delivery, optimised vehicle performance and delivery of hybrid system attributes.
  • Guarantee PE ownership and delivery to the specific vehicle programme requirements including:

o Component Specification which specifies integration requirements for PE units.

o Support Hybrid System FMEA, System DVP, Support Vehicle / Hybrid System level test specifications

o PE planning, timing & delivery including design, release, ECR/ECN in line with ETRS requirements, development and validation plans

o PE BOM management & tracking

o Robust concerns resolution

Delivery of PE for all projects in line with MDP (McLaren Development Process) and ensuring that Project Management KPIs are on track          

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A good level of technical knowledge & experience of Electric Drive Technology design, test & production delivery
  • Experience in Mechanical PE design, packaging & release desirable
  • Good CATIA V5 2D/3D skills with GD&T application experience desirable
  • Support calibration of PE components
  • Design / integration of electrical / electronic hardware, including circuit layout, schematics, etc. desirable
  • Good knowledge of High Voltage connection topologies and safety standards.
  • Experience and leadership of testing with HiL (Hardware in the Loop) and Rig systems to prove integration quality desirable
  • Good understanding of Inverters, DC/DC converters, Chargers and Charging Standards, etc.
  • Electrical component and circuit simulation using Saber, PSpice, Sim-Electronics, or similar desirable
  • Design and analysis for electromagnetic emissions standards, ideally in an automotive application.
  • Familiar with embedded controller communication protocols (CAN, LIN etc.)
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products.                                                                                      
  • Experienced in OEM or tier one component delivery (product development lifecycle)

  • Good systems design and development knowledge
  • Experience in component release management and problem solving.
