Purpose of Role
As the Senior Project Engineer - Metallic Structures, you will lead the design and engineering of a specific set of metallic structures components across all McLaren Automotive vehicle lines and projects.

Please note this is a hybrid position, you will be on site as and when required.
Principal Accountabilities

  • Working on all aspects of Body Structures delivery on our future vehicle programmes. 
  • Working in a cross-functional team to deliver all systems in line with targets, KPI’s and milestones set by the MDP and Vehicle Line management leaders, on multiple vehicle programmes. 
  • Working within a cross functional team from R&D stage, through concept, design release, production launch and series production support to collectively deliver the whole vehicle specification targets and contribute to the overall business KPIs.  
  • Responsibility to release designs that meet the following targets through coordination of internal and external design resources: Cost (Piece, Tooling, D&D), Performance (As specified through the full vehicle attributes and cascaded down to component level specification), Timing,  Feasibility (supporting in house manufacturing or assembly processes as well as supplied components).
  • Responsibility for Problem Solving:  From problem avoidance at the initial stages of new projects (Risk Assessments, FMEA, Lessons learnt) to practical problem solving at prototype stage and in series production. 
  • Responsibility for accurate reporting: Bill Of Materials management (part numbering, structuring, design change process), Weight management through correct management of the BOM, Costs (including spend forecast, risks and opportunities),  Project status reporting.
  • Responsibility for authoring component and systems technical specifications. 
  • Supporting a cross-functional team including external suppliers’ network, quality, logistics, vehicle engineering and development, purchasing and manufacturing engineers.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience in an OEM or tier one with a high level of Body Structures systems technical knowledge is essential, particularly in field of metallic structures.
  • Experience and technical knowledge of Crash Structure Design – energy absorption, force-displacement metrics, and testing processes is essential.
  • Experience of Aluminium materials and process knowledge – grades, properties, heat treatments is essential.
  • Knowledge of metallic structures manufacturing technologies is essential: Castings (sand, gravity die, high/low pressure die), Extrusions, Fabrications, Pressings.
  • Knowledge of structures joining technologies is essential: Bolted joints, Welding, Riveting, Bonding. 
  • Experience with cost estimation and engineering of metallic components is desirable.
  • Proven ability in delivery project management within an APQP or similar framework.
  • Relevant Experience in Lightweight Body Design and materials technology is essential.
  • CATIA V5 experience is desirable.
  • Knowledge of DFMEA and GD&T is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Body Engineering Simulation and Analysis tools and processes is desirable.
  • Educated to Degree level in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering is desirable.
