Purpose of Role

As a Senior Engineer – Projects Management within New Product Quality, you will engage at the very front end of the conceptual design process and play an integral role within the project team as the lead Quality representative, to influence the style as well as product to support the business and product quality objectives. 

The collation and understanding of current product issues sourced from both internal departmental systems and external field sensors is central to this role to ensure continuous product improvement. This is a challenging area with responsibilities ranging from functional resource management, project gateways, initial product target setting, engineering release sign off all the way through to vehicle launch. 

The role relies upon excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a key attribute being the ability to challenge, persuade, convince, and guide with assertion, while building important relationships at all levels both internally and externally across the business.

Principal Accountabilities

Quality department coordination:

  • As the sole representative of quality at each project specific meeting, it will be your responsibility to ensure each business unit area within Quality is kept appraised of any activities affecting them. It is also key to ensure that customer quality aspects are considered throughout, and the right decisions are made based on this. 
  • Achieving all project gateway milestones is key to the successful delivery of all new products. Therefore, you will be required to coordinate the completion of all MDP deliverables for your given project. 
  • Dimensional Variation Analysis (DVA) coordination 
  • Ensure all aspects of the Dimensional Variation Analysis (DVA) role are completed, through the effective leadership of a small team to achieve the required quality output and MDP requirements. 

Design Concept Performance Prediction: 

  • As an integral part of the NPQ team, involvement begins at the front end of the conceptual design process, working cross-functionally to evaluate the product and process design capability against critical quality targets for major vehicle systems, covering exterior, interior and dynamic function groups. 
  • Understand and orientate simulation results to direct business metrics for reporting to senior management at critical project gateways. 

 

Design Concept Risk Management:

  • Working with perceived quality department to expose and manage virtual problems at an early stage of product development and communicate to the business, thus finding optimal design solutions. 
  • Commercial impacts and business constraints in relation to component quality expectations. 
  • Effectively communicate concerns to senior management for concept/business decisions.  

Design Concept Release Quality (Engineering Release):

  • Provide an integrated link between design intent, quality target expectation and engineering drawing / quality control plan definition to ensure robust design capability and effective communication.  

Launch management – Quality:  

  • Lead the faults management team to ensure all Quality issues are raised within the company faults management system. 
  • Coordinate vehicle movement through the Quality department, and work with those areas to ensure they have identified all quality issues and raised Quality Notification’s (QNs) accordingly. 
  • Coordinate the MPA (McLaren Production Audit), fault resolution tracker to ensure the project has clear direction on all quality issues. 
  • Represent Quality at the weekly launch readiness reviews, presenting the overall project quality status.  

Any other activities as defined by management.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A degree in mechanical / automotive engineering or similar (2:1 or above) or equivalent experience in a similar role.
  • Experienced with CATIA V5
  • Demonstrable experience in GD&T to BS8888 standard
  • Experience of 8D or Practical Problem Solving (PPS) 
  • Methodical approach to work with strong analytical skills
  • Self-starter capable of using initiative
  • Experience with the launch of low volume vehicles into the production environment
  • Demonstratable experience of problem-solving techniques and the tools used.
  • New product development experience in the automotive industry 
  • 3DCS Tolerance analysis software, or similar
  • The application of best practice location strategies for a range of components/assemblies, materials and manufacturing processes covering composites, polymer mouldings, pressed steel/aluminium sheet metal, castings and laminates
  • Understanding of SPC, statistics and process capabilities

  • As one of our Senior Engineers you will naturally have an understanding and appreciation for low volume vehicle production and brand requirements.
  • We work in a fast-paced environment so the ability to act under pressure with calmness, clarity of thought and decisive authority is crucial.
  • You will need to travel to off-site development facilities, within the UK and throughout Europe, therefore a flexible approach to travel is required.
  • You will have the determination to drive forward the business to ‘Best in Class’ performance standards in line with brand expectations and be a lateral thinker able to think outside of the box to make structured and objective decisions.
