Description & Requirements

Background

No restraints. No limitations. We don’t simply push boundaries. We completely rethink them. McLaren Automotive exists to create breath-taking performance road cars.

With innovation at the core of all we do, every challenge starts with the same question. How can we do it better? This restless spirit runs right through McLaren Automotive. And the search for perfection is evident in everything we do.

Purpose of Role

To design, engineer, integrate & deliver, from concept to production, high voltage battery electrical systems, ensuring that they fulfil all the programme requirements (cost, timing, performance / function / attributes).

Key Responsibilities:

·       Detailed ESS knowledge and experience
·       Ensure electrical system meets the ESS requirements including component selection
·       Ownership and delivery of low voltage and high voltage architecture of the ESS
·       Responsible for electrical system DFMEA and DVP (component and system level)
·       Responsible for any root cause analysis activity related to electrical systems
·       Ownership of electrical system and subcomponents (including LV & HV wiring) technical specification
·       BMS interface alignment (shut off concept, current, voltage, temperature sensing, pump, contactor, etc.)
·       Support purchasing activity related to electrical system components. Technical point of contact with the supplier
·       Support ESS attribute delivery, managing releases, DVPs, DFMEAs
·       Support ESS assembly planning and allocation
·       Support design-focused vehicle level meetings for ESS integration
Principal Accountabilities

·       Guarantee ESS delivery to all vehicle projects – to specification, on time and on budget

·       Understand and support the package constraints for the ESS. Work with ESS suppliers, McLaren Concept team & Digital Mock-Up team (DMU), Dimensional Management team (DM) and other Engineering teams to ensure programme specific ESS meet technical and package targets

·       Collaborate with the Engineering Manager/Principal Engineer of ESS, Chief Engineers and the Head of Engineering to deliver innovation in ESS technologies that are aligned with the ESS Technology Roadmap and produce vehicle project-relevant results

·       Working within, and influence, the Vehicle Programme & Engineering Management teams to ensure that the Electric Drive, within the propulsion department, responsibilities collectively deliver the whole vehicle targets

·       Work in collaboration with the ESS designer engineers to deliver detailed designs on time, to predetermined quality, cost and weight targets, within Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) constraints

·       Work with the designers and suppliers to achieve efficient, innovative and lightweight designs

·       Ensure design solutions deliver systems that meet attribute targets such as NVH, thermal, durability, performance (power, emissions, and response)

·       Ensure the ESS electrical system components interface seamlessly to the wider car including structural interfaces, electrical distribution system, cooling components & body panels

·       Works with Supply Chain Management to ensure delivery of the ESS on schedule for all phases of prototype, pilot, pre-production and production build

·       Prepare and present material to support external and internal project status reviews

·       Undertake ESS technical risk management to ensure project delivery, optimised vehicle performance and delivery of electric drive system attributes

·       Support ESS simulation with Propulsion Engineering CAE team

·       Guarantee ESS ownership and delivery to the specific vehicle programme requirements including:

o   Electrical system and subsystem specifications which specify integration requirements for ESS with other Electric Drive System (EDS) components and vehicle systems

o   Lead electrical system FMEA and DVP, and support Electric Drive System FMEA and DVP. Support Vehicle / Electric Drive System level test specifications

o   Support line-management to define ESS development budgets & expenditure

o   ESS planning, timing & delivery including design, release, Engineering Records (ERs) in line with ETRS requirements, development and validation plans

o   ESS BOM management & tracking

o   Robust resolution of engineering concerns
