Description & Requirements

Background

No restraints. No limitations. We don’t simply push boundaries. We completely rethink them. McLaren Automotive exists to create breath-taking performance road cars.

With innovation at the core of all we do, every challenge starts with the same question. How can we do it better? This restless spirit runs right through McLaren Automotive. And the search for perfection is evident in everything we do.

Purpose of Role

Reporting to the Principal Engineer you will own responsibility for the engineering design of Interior components and systems from Concept through to release for production.
You will own the design of modules and be the architect of the engineering execution of designs that deliver the desires of the design studio to strict weight, cost and quality targets of the business.
Support, be part of and develop within the core team that delivers brand defining, high quality interiors that exceed all customer expectations.
During some program phases your expertise could be deployed into other disciplines in the engineering team.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Working within a multi-skilled team you will be responsible for delivering full component and system design solutions to required technical performance, weight, cost (BoM and Investment), quality and timing targets.
  • Work with and organise external design resource to deliver parts of your own interior modules.
  • Create and author design guides to assist in creating McLaren’s library of best practice.
  • Support cross functional teams of vehicle attribute owners, designers, engineers (internal/external) and other business functions.
  • Represent the Interior function group for your module at whole vehicle design review.
  • Support and/or define best working practise within engineering group.
  • During some program phases your expertise could be deployed into other disciplines in the engineering team.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • You will have a broad technical knowledge and experience of high and medium volume production technologies. Interior modules design a benefit but not a necessity. Other engineering disciplines will be considered if you can demonstrate an appropriate level of expertise in relevant technologies – Injection moulding’s, mechanism design, light weight composites, castings and fabrications.
  • Excellent feasibility assessment of design proposals, including design for manufacture and DFMEA’s
  • You will be able to confidently analyse and overcome technical challenges with workable and innovative engineering solutions.
  • You will be highly proficient in the definition and application GD & T.
  • Specific knowledge of Legislative and automotive design constraints for interior systems preferred.
  • Proficient in solid modelling and surfacing using a 3D CAD system – CATIA V5 preferred
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products.
  • Mechanical or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or Equivalent work based experience.
Personal Attributes
  • Articulate ideas to internal customers and team members of all levels
  • Ability to tactfully challenge without alienating
  • Adaptable and flexible communication styles to effectively transfer key information
  • Freely share knowledge and findings with others
  • Drive solutions and encourage development in others
  • Able to organise work in order to meet deadlines and support team goals
  • Identify issues and take a proactive approach to dealing with them
  • Think creatively to produce workable ideas and novel solutions
  • Have the drive and commitment to see activities to completion
  • Manage own development and performance
  • Strive to improve and keep knowledge and skills up to date
  • Passion for our work – Go beyond the call of duty
