Description & Requirements
No restraints. No limitations. We don’t simply push boundaries. We completely rethink them. McLaren Automotive exists to create breath-taking performance road cars.
With innovation at the core of all we do, every challenge starts with the same question. How can we do it better? This restless spirit runs right through McLaren Automotive. And the search for perfection is evident in everything we do.
You will be responsible for the Aerodynamic and Powertrain Cooling System development of our road cars using a combination of 1D simulation, CFD, scale wind tunnel and vehicle testing to investigate concepts and complete design validation against programme targets.
You will also apply continuous improvement methods, to support the development of our testing methodologies and design tool correlation, to aid concurrent engineering of our highly-integrated road cars.
This role is part of the Aerothermal department which likes to support an innovative and collaborative atmosphere therefore we are interested in a diverse background of talents and experience.
- Programme lead for Aerodynamic and Powertrain Cooling Systems from functional specification to programme sign-off, meeting programme attribute and timing targets
- Use a mix of 1D simulation, scale wind tunnel and vehicle testing methods to develop the vehicles Aerothermal attributes, to meet programme targets, for powertrain cooling systems, downforce, drag, airflow through radiators, brake ducts and HVAC ducting
- Communicate system design progress and critical issues to programme management and the Chief Engineer. Leading Attribute, Styling, and Design reviews to ensure targets are meet
- Define attribute DVP and work in continual collaboration with Vehicle Development and the Vehicle Validation Coordinator to plan and ensure delivery of DVP activities
- Support with the continual development of Aerothermal methodologies (scale wind tunnel, vehicle testing) to reduce development times, improve test data accuracy and correlation of our design tools and increase the level of cross-function/attribute design integration
- First-rate Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering degree
- Strong understanding in aerodynamic and heat transfer fundamentals
- Creativity and ability to develop ideas from first principles
- Experience in wind tunnel and/or mule vehicle testing and strong understanding of calibration, measurement and data post processing methods -CANape, MATLAB
- Expert knowledge of the CFD technique with particular understanding of modelling requirements for external aerodynamics and conjugate heat transfer driven flows an advantage
- Proven analytical abilities with 1D systems modelling of cooling circuits – AMESim, GT Power, MATLAB/Simulink
- Knowledge of Powertrain cooling circuit designs with particular understanding of, charge-air cooling and refrigerant circuits preferred
- Relevant Automotive experience of high-end or niche vehicles
- Quantitative rigor and an inquisitive outlook to prove design solutions
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Independent and intrinsically self motivated.
