Purpose of Role

  • Support the Design Team to “create breath-taking products that tell the visual story of their function
  • Manage Teams within Series Product lines in line with MAL MDP processes and integrate between studio, concept and functional groups.
Principal Accountabilities

People Management responsibilities with a strong technical background in Studio Engineering and a Project Management Bias.


  • Manage Exterior and Interior Principal Studio Engineers to manage and release  production-feasible, aesthetically-optimised surfaces that maintain design intent and are to a high quality of surface execution.
  • Ensure Surfaces meet engineering hardpoints, are to specified McLaren standards and attributes and released in time to support component production schedules.
  • Support as required FUNCTIONAL STUDIO ENGINEERING MANAGER with Departmental process and strategy developments
  • Assist FUNCTIONAL STUDIO ENGINEERING MANAGER in the Virtual in digital development within the studio engineering organisation.
  • Manage resource requirements associated to all associated series programs
  • Manage Budgets of all studio engineering series programs
  • Develop Skills Matrixes for the principal studio engineers and perform development reviews.
  • Business release surfaces and systems to gateway deliverables.
  • Ensure Design produce Surfaces according to McLaren digital surfacing guidelines, standards and release procedures.

  • Escalate to FUNCTIONAL STUDIO ENGINEERING MANAGER if Surface releases don’t meet expected targets.
  • Report into Line Manager weekly updates to ensure clear delivery status and agreed targets are maintained.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Resolve any conflicts of inputs if escalated by Senior Surface Designer.
  • Set up and chair regular Agile system of task allocation
  • Set up and maintain surface release tracker to reflect Agile status
  • Receive detailed surface status from Senior Surfacing Designer [Zone Owner]
  • Support the allocation of the CAS surfacing tasks
  • Reconcile Inputs where possible without the need to escalate
  • Escalate irreconcilable inputs to Digital Surface Design Manager
  • Provide any reference CAS information (e.g. points) to assist clay development
  • Initiate and run screen reviews for contentious, complex or ongoing surface issues
  • Coordinate approval of final surface for aesthetics and maintenance of design intent
  • Complete surface validation checks prior to release to Studio Engineer and approve release to ensure right first-time targets are met.
  • Track SharePoint document releases to declare that the final surface is ready for release
Personal Attributes

Produce and distribute surface KPIs daily to FUNCTIONAL STUDIO ENGINEERING MANAGER

  • Create and maintain VGDT tracker and highlight issues for resolution, track accountability and drive for completion to targets
  • Communicate business release schedule to FUNCTIONAL STUDIO ENGINEERING MANAGER
  • Prepare project status overview, for weekly Studio Engineering Team meeting
  • Prepare resource status overview, for weekly Team meeting
  • Attend weekly Digital Surface Design Commodity Meeting
  • Set agenda, manage attendance of team and Chair Design Delivery Meetings
  • Attend project meetings on behalf of the studio engineering team
  • Attend concept engineering reviews on behalf of the studio engineering team as requested.
  • Escalate if resource on programme insufficient or task has stalled
  • Input to the High-Level Plan discussions at G-2 -G4
  • Advice on planning resources for the programme at G-2 – G4
  • Offer input during the creation and update of studio Engineering standards and methods
  • Understand the VR process and relationship between function group activity
  • Run internal workshops and knowledge sharing sessions to enhance team competencies
  • Delegate secondary tasks to team members
