Description & Requirements

Background

No restraints. No limitations. We don’t simply push boundaries. We completely rethink them. McLaren Automotive exists to create breath-taking performance road cars.

With innovation at the core of all we do, every challenge starts with the same question. How can we do it better? This restless spirit runs right through McLaren Automotive. And the search for perfection is evident in everything we do.

Purpose of Role

Electronic Systems at McLaren Automotive are a key element characterising the performance and attributes of our cars. The features and applications we develop are fundamental to the performance of the vehicles and are highly influential to our customers perception of the quality of our products.

McLaren Automotive has introduced in the Artura a brand new high-performance Zonal Electrical and Electronic Architecture, embedding cutting-edge technologies such as Ethernet backbone, Over-The-Air software update, Cybersecurity, AUTOSAR.

The McLaren E/E Architecture is designed to host complex electronic systems, such as Hybrid Powertrain systems, Chassis controls, luxury Body/Comfort systems, advanced HMI, state-of-the-art ADAS, Connectivity systems.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Work with attribute & feature owners to derive system requirements for all customer / functional / legislative requirements.
  • Lead the system design and functional partioning of all Chassis electrical functions.
  • Evaluate multiple system design concepts in conjunction with internal software engineers & supplier module owners to optimise the system performance, whilst also respecting technical & commercial constraints.
  • Allocate functions into ECUs and signals into networks. Define relevant interfaces & create System Logical & Physical architecture diagrams. Ensure the design is robust to any vehicle architecture constraints & that any limitations are identified early in the design process. Work with the Preevision team to plan and implement the system design.
  • Conduct appropriate analysis (use cases, sequence diagrams, simulations, state machines etc.) for defining system behaviour and deriving functional requirements. May include generating & maintaining SysML / UML models for specific systems.
  • Support Functional Safety and Cyber Security teams to ensure concepts & requirements can be achieved in the Chassis domain
  • Document the system design in the requirements management tool, creating System Design Specifications. Maintain requirement quality and traceability.
  • Define EOL and Diagnostic requirements for successful monitoring of the features and support their implementation in Manufacturing/Aftersales environments
  • Be the Subject Matter Expert for the system across all McLaren vehicle programmes. Provide technical support and assistance on topics relating to the integration and harmonisation of multiple interconnected components.
  • Support prototype vehicle electrical system design & specification of bridging parts (hardware, software or calibration).
  • Work with Chassis Validation Engineer to ensure that System Test Cases robustly verify the system design & that any issues found are resolved.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Electrical or Automotive engineering degree 2:1, or above
  • Significant experience of system definition, system architecture development, requirements specification, design/performance modelling, systems integration, system assessment and acceptance
  • Significant experience in applying Systems Engineering and in solving complex technical issues using a structured approach
  • Ability to decompose high level requirements into low level system critical requirement and creation of atomic system requirements
  • Previous experience with automotive network designs (CAN/Ethernet/LIN)
  • Experience in IBM Rational DOORS or similar is essential.
  • Experience in using JIRA or similar is essential.
  • Experience in Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and SysML using Matlab & Dassault Systems (or similar) is preferred.
  • Technical leadership skills are also important, to be recognised by a wide development team as a reference point for the Chassis system design
Personal Attributes

  • Strong interest in Automotive E/E Architectures and Electronic Controls Systems including market trends
  • Naturally technical, able to employ fundamental engineering principles
  • High self-motivation, willingness to learn and develop
  • Confident and concise communicator ensuring risks and benefits are communicated clearly to higher management
  • Ability to manage personal and team priorities understanding programmes’ needs
  • Conscientious and attention to quality, reliability, and safety
  • High self-motivation to respect programmes’ deadlines in a challenging environment
