Purpose of Role

The Principal Engineer is responsible for developing process, tools, software, and calibration to deliver Emissions and Efficiency attributes. These attributes include engine start ability, compliance with worldwide emissions regulations and achieving best in class vehicle efficiency in terms of CO2 and EV range.

The principal engineer is fully responsible for technical delivery of the team for all projects and has line management and supplier management responsibilities.

Principal Accountabilities
  • The Expert in the business on the Emissions and Efficiency topics. This includes knowledge of applicable legislation, pollutants formation principles, software control strategies and the calibration activities associated.
  • Support attribute target setting via the development and usage of simulation tools, gathering of intelligence on current and upcoming legislation and supporting proof of concept activities
  • Line management responsibility for a team of 3 engineers.  Includes technical leadership, mentoring and developing their team, workload allocation & planning.  
  • Collaborate with the Powertrain Design team to define hardware architecture to support the delivery of our attributes
  • Collaborate with Suppliers, Controls & Electrical Architecture teams to define software requirements which will deliver competitive performance and achieve programme cost/timing/quality targets.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Engineering Degree 2:1 or above in Mechanical, Controls, Mechanical or Automotive.
  • Deep knowledge of Engine, Hybrid systems and Controls fundamentals
  • Knowledge of Bosch Engine Management Systems
  • Deep Knowledge of Calibration tools like ETA INCA/MDA, AVL Concerto
  • Deep knowledge of Matlab / Simulink use
  • Knowledge of approaches & techniques required to achieve compliance to industry standards for functional safety, diagnostics & software development
  • Full Driving licence
  • Automotive experience, with excellent understanding of vehicle product development processes
