Purpose of Role

Reporting to the Principal Engineer you will own responsibility for the engineering project execution including design, project execution using MDP principles of Interior Cabin and Trim components and systems, from Concept through to release for production.

You will own the design of modules and be the architect of the engineering execution of designs that deliver the desires of the design studio to strict weight, cost and quality targets of the business.

Support, be part of and develop within the core team that delivers brand defining, high quality interiors that exceed all customer expectations.

During some program phases your expertise could be deployed into other disciplines in the engineering team.

Principal Accountabilities


  • Working within a multi-skilled team you will be responsible for delivering full component and system design solutions to required technical performance, weight, cost (BoM and Investment), quality and timing targets, regarding Cabin and Trim systems for future McLaren cars
  • Work with and organise external design resource to deliver parts of your own interior modules.
  • Create and author design guides to assist in creating McLaren’s library of best practice.
  • Support cross functional teams of vehicle attribute owners, designers, engineers (internal/external) and other business functions.
  • Represent the Interior function group for your module at whole vehicle design review.
  • Support and/or define best working practise within engineering group.
  • Support throughout various program phases other disciplines in the engineering team, on an as needed basis.
  • Execution of MDP, and maintenance of DAD, RAT, VTC, PBS and project-based requirement tracking and gateway reporting.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • Broad technical knowledge and experience of high and medium volume production technologies.
  • Interior modules design knowledge.
  • Appropriate level of expertise in relevant technologies – Injection moulding’s, mechanism design, light weight composites, wood fibre substrates, leather wrapping etc. Excellent feasibility assessment of design proposals, including design for manufacture and DFMEA’s
  • Ability to confidently analyse and overcome technical challenges with workable and innovative engineering solutions.
  • High proficiency in the definition and application GD & T.
  • Specific knowledge of Legislative and automotive design constraints for interior systems preferred.
  • Proficient in solid modelling and surfacing using a 3D CAD system – CATIA V5 preferred
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products.
  • Mechanical or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or Equivalent work based experience.
