Purpose of Role

As a Project Engineer within the Exterior Trim team, you will work within a range of component commodities across the exterior of the vehicle, including Bumpers Systems, Badging, Exterior Trims & finishers, Aerodynamic Ducting Systems including Insulation to name a few!

  • Reporting to the Principal Engineer for Exterior Trim you will be able to push and develop your engineering capability, influencing and technically leading future exterior trim design across multiple vehicle development projects.
  • With a direct impact on vehicle performance, styling, and perceived quality in the market, you will be expected to manage and deliver innovative designs and ideas exceeding the current benchmark.
  • Be the Exterior Trim Project Engineering lead for design feasibility, detailed design and development aspects at component, sub-system and system level from ‘cradle to grave’
  • In parallel you will be expected, where required, to manage the design workload for a team of Design Engineers assigned to Body Exterior.
  • Be responsible for attending and supporting meetings/reviews and reacting to any issues relevant to Body Exterior to best serve your customer groups such as Styling, Concept, and wider Project Management teams.
  • Liaise and work cross-functionally with the wider McLaren Automotive engineering community, suppliers, manufacturing engineering and R&D team.
  • This is a role that will push you to develop your engineering capability whilst being confronted with technical questions daily with the exposure to other areas of the business, particularly at the Concept, Design and Development Phase. The reward to this challenge is the opportunity to have a major influence on the final product with direct input into the design of exterior componentry, predominantly in polymer materials. 
Principal Accountabilities
  • Management of component and system level delivery at each project milestone, from styling feasibility through series production.
  • Project Management in accordance with the McLaren Development Process.
  • Management of key suppliers and the supplier relationship for your systems.
  • Identification of opportunities to reduce complexity, cost and weight.
  • Manage and deliver bill of materials costs, investment and weight for responsible component and system set.
  • Manage and deliver, Technical Specifications, DFMEA, Engineering statements of work, engineering release, concerns resolution and DVP.
  • Manage risk and opportunities for your systems; financial, attribute and delivery.
  • Supplier Delivery – Manage each supplier with a cross functional team of Design, SQA, Quality Engineering, Logistics, Purchasing, Dimensional Management, Manufacturing and Service personnel to ensure complete PPAP is delivered for every component to support program timing.
  • Definition and delivery of a component road map of innovation for future projects.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Strong technical project management with proven evidence of decision making.
  • Previous experience of OEM or tier one component and system management with a demonstrable record of delivery of the accountabilities.
  • Proven leadership of design and cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent commercial awareness to maintain a focus on cost, profit, quality and risk.
  • A strong track record of delivering designs to timing, weight and cost targets.
  • Supplier management, comfortable with understanding and implementing DFM requirements within the project scope.
  • Background in low volume, high performance sports or racing cars preferred.
  • Mechanical or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above.
  • CATIA V5 2D/3D skills desirable.
