Purpose of Role

As Principal Designer you will be responsible for leading a team of CAD designers from concept design phase through to production release and responsible for detailed design and packaging for all vehicle electronic components including the Low Voltage EDS wiring systems.

Working as part of a small team reporting to the EDS manager you will be required to lead the design task definition, resource planning both internal / external.

You will be expected to maintain an up-to-date account for the progress made reporting efficiently the progress made both internal and external governance.

Good communication skills are essential to keep account of the design status for multiple programs.

Right First Time (RFT) approach for each new design solutions with lessons learnt for existing vehicle platforms as part of continuous improvement.

Principal Accountabilities

·         Responsible for packaging all LV vehicle electronics components in accordance with the McLaren Maintain Development Process (MDP), McLaren Standards Library (MSLs) and ISO26262 requirements.  

·         Experience of packaging key electrical systems ADAS, PDC, TPMS, Antenna, Cameras, infotainment, switches and displays to name some of the vehicle systems.

·         Responsible for detailed design of Wiring Harnesses and LV Power & Ground distribution systems.

·         Maintain design processes and procedures, Tech Specs and DVPs.

·         Responsible of designing and delivering bracketry, plastic trays to retain electrical components within the Vehicle.

·         Support EDS commercial team deliverables to meet cost and weight targets for each project, in collaboration with the ES+C team.

·         Support Projects Engineers and VLMs to deliver technical deliverables (DVP, Tech Specs, DFMEAs, PPAP) and support commercial engagements with suppliers.

·         Represent the team in technical meetings and discussions, reporting information, concerns and milestone from the team to the project and vice versa.

·         Liaison with external suppliers and supervise the correct execution of designs and McLaren’s design methods.

·         Assist Project Engineers on BoM maintenance.

·         Practical vehicle fault analysis with a hands-on approach during development/concept build phases. Provide Practical Problem Solving (PPS) solutions in collaboration with of Systems Owners and VLMs.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

·         Educated to degree level or relevant engineering qualification with ten years design experience.

·         CATIA V5 – Electrical Harness, Part Design, Surfacing and Assembly workbenches.

·         Expert within automotive electrical design packaging for all electrical systems including modules, Antenna, displays, switches, wiring harnesses, batteries, brackets, trays.

·         Experience within automotive or aerospace design discipline.

·         Extensive team leadership experience.

·         Task/manpower planning.

·         2D Drawing creation and GD&T.

·         Responsible for engineering design standards and working design guides.

·         Best practise design principles, able to give guidance to the team.

·         Materials properties/compatibility awareness.

·         Pro-active and passionate about continuous improvement.

·         Supplier governance
