Purpose of Role

Lead the design activities for a specific set of Body Structures components across all McLaren Automotive vehicle lines and projects.  Ensure the systems and components you are responsible for are delivered robustly via McLaren Development Process [MDP] together with all applicable attributes; Passive Safety, Weight, NVH and Quality of Design.  All areas to be delivered on time and budget. The scope of the role covers all projects from R&D stage to series production and vehicles in the field. 

The Principal Design Engineer is a true technical leader and expert in his/her area of responsibility and will work within a matrix organization with direct report line to the Platform Design Lead whilst delivering towards project based goals set by Vehicle Line management leaders on multiple parallel projects.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Ownership of the design of individual Body-In-White systems / components on our future vehicle programmes. Leading the design of a wide range of systems and components such as Tub, Windscreen Surround and Upper Structure, Frames and Crash Structures, utilising materials and processes such as Carbon Fibre (pre-preg, RTM, SMC), Aluminium (Extrusions, Castings).  
  • “Cradle to Grave” approach – working within a cross functional team from R&D stage, through concept, design release, production launch and series production support to collectively deliver the whole vehicle specification targets and contribute to the overall business KPIs.   
  • New platform packaging, concept studies and detailed design.  
  • Liaison with the rest of the design and engineering community, suppliers, manufacturing engineering and R&D team.   
  • Coordinate design work to deliver timely design releases meeting all design for manufacture input from suppliers.  
  • Develop and specify GD&T data set on CAD models or drawing taking into account all inputs from parts suppliers, assembly processes and dimensional management studies.  
  • Supervision and development of other members of the Body-In-White design team.  
  • With particular respect to Body-In-White technology, contribute to the continuous improvement and further development of CAD modelling and product definition techniques.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Strong passion for automotive design and development   
  • Sound understanding of mechanical design fundamentals 
  • Knowledge of high performance and lightweight structural materials including the following metallic and carbon fibre composites manufacturing technologies essential: 
  • Pre-preg and Autoclave 
  • RTM (High/Low pressure, VARTM) 
  • SMC mouldings 
  • aluminium alloys, high strength steel, titanium  
  • Good understanding of bolted and bonded mechanical joints design  
  • Good understanding of GD&T standards  
  • Experience of high and niche vehicle (low volume) programmes  
  • Knowledge of CATIA V5 and experience on equivalent composites design toolboxes is essential.  
  • Understanding of FE analysis techniques to drive structural design and its optimization is essential.  
  • Experience of best drawing and modelling practises or methodologies would be beneficial.  
  • Experience of VPM or similar would be beneficial.  
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products
