No restraints. No limitations. We don’t simply push boundaries. We completely rethink them. McLaren Automotive exists to create breath-taking performance road cars.

With innovation at the core of all we do, every challenge starts with the same question. How can we do it better? This restless spirit runs right through McLaren Automotive. And the search for perfection is evident in everything we do.

Purpose of Role

At McLaren, Perceived Quality is a uniquely broad collaboration across Engineering, Design, Marketing and Quality. We map the customer experience and anticipate the  psychological outcomes, which empowers us to advocate for the customer  and provide a unique input into product decisions.
We have an unusually broad scope, defined from research and a knowledge of consumer science, and we are involved on any component with which the customer interacts.
We are looking for a talented individual with an automotive background to help us execute our vision for vehicles with a higher sense of worth.

As the Perceived Quality Specialist, you will be responsible for creating targets, specifications, and designs of components to achieve the attribute targets on several future vehicle projects. These sensory attributes are a collection of subjective and objective factors which have an influence on the customer’s perception of the overall Perceived Quality of the vehicle, with respect to its intended purpose and benchmark competitors. The Perceived Quality Specialist reports to the Perceived Quality Leader. You will not receive direct supervision and will be expected to manage their own tasks and workload. You will be assigned full responsibility for up to two vehicle programmes, on engineering components across the whole vehicle.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Is actively involved in the Attribute Annual Improvement Projects.
  • Create and cascade the programme requirements of vehicle performance in regard of Perceived Quality perceptions. These are expressed in subjective scores and objective performance targets.
  • Constantly persuade programme management, and people from across the business, of the importance of executing the solutions which achieve these targets.
  • Set up and co-ordinate specific PQ reviews for each programme for a successful and efficient management of PQ concerns.
  • Create and drive the achievement of the Craftsmanship targets (Gap and Flush Plans). Set up and co-ordinate the Gap and Flush Plans reviews to enable the successful and efficient delivery of the Craftsmanship targets.
  • As this is a 'subjective' attribute, there is no right or wrong answer and a high-level of aesthetic judgement is required.
  • Visualise these engineering designs through specialised visualisation software, and through 'hard models'.
  •  Create Perceived Quality testing and assessment schedule for engineering prototype and production components.
  • Carry out testing and assessment of physical components for requirements set out in the Perceived Quality attribute.
  • Write Engineering Sign-off Report for Perceived Quality attribute and submit to Engineering Director for approval.
  • Co-ordinate lessons-learned activities at the successful completion of each engineering sign-off milestone.
  • The Perceived Quality Specialist is accountable that the engineering component designs achieve the targets approved at the start of the programme.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

You will need to be degree-qualified in a relevant Engineering discipline, Product Design or Consumer Science. This role requires in-depth specialist knowledge of one of these fields. Awards received during study or work will be influential. You should be able to demonstrate design (aesthetic) empathy through work experience or personal projects. You will require exceptionally good MS Office Skills Knowledge. CATIA CAD software or Alias/ICEMSurf CAS software is not necessary but would be a benefit. Your knowledge of the English language must be good (at least European C1 level).

Personal Attributes

You will join a close-knit and supportive team of talented people from diverse backgrounds, who will guide and support you in your journey to become a perceived quality specialist. We will actively seek to develop you and promote your career. The opportunities in McLaren for a person in this role are many. Beyond that, we are a company which invests in potential, and you will equally be judged on the following personal characteristics:

       • Analytically intelligent, thinks fast, naturally creative and questioning.

       • Presentable, self-confident, and affable.

       • Motivated, driven, positive mindset.

       • Curious, resilient, acts with integrity.

       • Clear thought and an organised mind, with attention to detail.
