Purpose of Role

The Packaging Engineer designs, tests and implements packaging designs that are an integral part of the organisation’s Product Development process.  They also review and improve existing packaging designs.  This individual develops, designs and test standards and guidelines for developing packaging suppliers to achieve functional packaging cost driven targets / budgets.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Oversee and manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development and performance testing.
  • Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely and cost-effective solutions.
  • Analyse engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environment and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging.
  • Establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation.  Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Work closely with suppliers, engineering product management, operations and sourcing.
  • Participate in new model introduction teams, to deliver new model to the business plan.
  • Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labour, efficiency, transportation and storage.
  • Work closely with Engineering and Procurement to optimise packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalisation, supply assurance.
  • Ensure compliance with customer, regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs.
  • Work with the manufacturing department to ensure that the packaging designs are optimised for manufacturability.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive test plans to ensure that packaging exceeds customer specifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • A Bachelor’s Degree / Master’s Degree in Packaging Technology or Design Engineering would be advantageous.  

  • Experience in industrial or consumer packaging is essential as well as knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation and specification standards (ISO, etc.).  Demonstrable proficiency in 3D CAD software is needed.

  • Willing to conduct analysis and make recommendations to improve business case utilisation.
  • Challenge the status quo and bring innovative ideas into the open.  Think outside the box, providing clear understanding of our goals and objectives.
  • Integrating continuous improvement projects in a manufacturing organisation.
  • Working with packaging within a fast-paced logistics operation.
  • Ability to manage and use initiative for unplanned situations.
  • Working in a pressurised environment with changing and often conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to take the lead and manage any situation.
  • Good Presentation skills.
  • Ability to work cross functionally and develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain suitable process metrics and KPI’s.
