Purpose of Role

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer role is to ensure the stable operation of all storage environments and their supporting components such as backup solutions, storage devices, SAN switches, storage applications and storage monitoring. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer manages and configures services across all storage and backup vendor platforms both on premise and within a hybrid cloud architecture. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer is involved in the strategy, design, planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimising of the related storage and backup infrastructure component services. 

Principal Accountabilities
  • Take technical ownership for all storage and backup related services and resources managed by Group IT whether on premise or cloud based
  • Provide capacity and performance management for environments and work with other team members to ensure future requirements are met and planned for
  • Assist on the technical response to mission critical service outages
  • Perform infrastructure tuning and performance monitoring
  • Specify, enhance and develop documentation for standards conformance and best practices
  • Specify, evaluate, review, test and document new storage related products
  • Interact, influence and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure infrastructure related products and services
  • Support, monitor, manage and develop existing storage solutions, including storage area network and backup systems
  • Develop, document, implement and maintain policies, procedures and associated training plans for storage and backup administration, appropriate use, and disaster recovery
  • Conduct research on storage related products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts
  • Perform system backups and recovery, ensuring scheduled backups complete daily and in a timely manner
  • Perform regular testing of the backup system
  • Interact, influence, and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure storage related products and services
  • Mentor and provide guidance and training to less experienced members of the team
  • Perform equipment, hardware and software upgrades
  • Keep up to date of current technologies and approaches
  • Assist in establishing service level agreements with end users
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • This role requires demonstrated skills and technology competencies at the following levels:
  • Proven experience in delivering and supporting a complex storage and backup environment
  • Strong experience in managing storage subsystems including block (Dell/Infinidat), file (Isilon/Windows) and object (Dell ECS) platforms as well as familiarity with iSCSI and FC storage network protocols along with operating system configuration, both Windows and Linux. 
  • Strong experience in Enterprise backup technologies such as Avamar 
  • Strong experience in managing Storage Area Networks, specifically Brocade Director switches and zoning methods
  • Demonstrable experience integrating storage with cloud providers as a hybrid service i.e Azure/AWS
  • Demonstrable experience of service design, installation, configuration, and management across a broad range of storage and backup services
  • Experience of data migration processes with tooling
  • Experience in monitoring tools such as Nagios and SCOM
  • Experience working within an ITIL framework
  • Good understanding of virtualisation, load balancing, High Availability/clustering and caching processes
  • Good understanding of fundamental IP routing & switching concepts
  • Good understanding of cyber security practices and be able to educate end users on best practises
  • Understanding of server and storage virtualisation
  • DevOps experience preferred, but not essential
  • Close liaison with all colleagues from across the business;
  • Works at a strategic level with project managers and architecture team influencing, designing and delivering service improvements and business change
  • Works at a strategic level with external suppliers & partners as appropriate
  • Contributes and actively influences Group and Business strategies
  • Demonstrates technical leadership in their area of Infrastructure responsibility
  • Occasionally required to respond to support requests out of hours;
  • Some travel to remote offices may be required
