Purpose of Role

The IT Category Manager will be responsible for the ongoing management of a specific Category within IT, you will be responsible for the Categories sourcing strategy and the execution of strategic and complex IT RFX sourcing projects through the full procurement lifecycle.

This position sits within our Services Procurement Function, for which you will report to the Commercial Manager for IT. The team consists of several complementary roles including, Category Managers, Facilities Category Specialist, Associate Category Analyst and a dedicated Tactical Buying Team. In addition to the immediate team the IT Category Manager will work closely with the Commercial Manager for IT, Project Managers, Finance, Business stakeholders, Legal and the product and process owner within the wider McLaren Group.

Principal Accountabilities


  • Identify commercial opportunities and sourcing strategies within (and where appropriate across) the various McLaren companies in the Information Technology expenditure category.
  • Support the Head of Services Procurement in the delivery of agreed strategic objectives in line with the Information Technology strategy and relevant Business Plans.
  • Act as liaison between McLaren and our vendors, ensuring stakeholder requirements and concerns are fully understood and ensure these are fed back during the appropriate stages to the vendors.
  • Ensure consistent procurement processes are undertaken to select the vendor that will provide optimum value and delivery for McLaren. This will include as appropriate, assessment of vendor risk, objective management of evaluation processes, negotiation and contract execution.
  • Plan, run and execute strategic and/or complex IT RFX sourcing projects, leading through the full procurement lifecycle.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Help manage the IT Procurement Category and help mentor the Associate Category Analyst and/or the IT Tactical Buyer’s.
  • To provide expertise and leadership in the Information Technology sourcing category, including market knowledge and desired RFX sourcing best practice.
  • To assist the Head of Services Procurement to define and deliver the IT Category plan and identify appropriate sourcing strategies on a rolling programme of areas to be addressed which generate benefits and achieve financial savings whilst mitigating risk for McLaren.
  • To confidently negotiate with Vendors at a high level ensuring best value and quality of service is maintained.
  • To setup and execute strategic and/or complex sourcing projects through the full procurement lifecycle, including (senior) stakeholder management.
  • To manage high value and/or complex contract renewals.
  • Work within the governed Vendor Management framework to manage the Categories Vendors.
  • Help drive compliance to the Procurement policy across the business.
  • To apply knowledge of contractual terms and conditions ensuring commercially attractive terms are agreed and contract spend remains in budget while mitigating risk in such terms.
  • To apply knowledge of IT services to implement appropriate contractual safeguards, SLAs and other operational measures to ensure vendors are incentivised to deliver a robust service.
  • When required, will present updates to the Head of Services Procurement, (senior) stakeholders on progress against the strategy and ongoing sourcing projects.
  • Work collaboratively with all internal stakeholders (IT, Finance, Legal and Service Owners) throughout sourcing projects to ensure continued alignment of objectives.
Personal Attributes


  • Ability to lead from the front and make executive successful, accurate decisions
  • Previous, strong experience of planning, running and executing complex RFX sourcing process end to end.
  • Adept at handling multiple projects and contracts concurrently.
  • Experience in setting up a category plans and/or sourcing strategies in a technology environment which focusses on both short-term savings and risk mitigation as well as long term commercial opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead negotiations and support in the development of negotiation strategies for large and complex projects and contracts projects in IT.
  • Experience in drafting, reviewing and controlling contractual documentation.
  • Strong, proven experience in tendering via the appropriate procurement method for any new or existing requirements.
  • The ability to combine professional project management and procurement skills on large scale technology projects.
  • A strong, confident, accomplished negotiator.
  • Commercial awareness with an ability to assess risk in the appropriate context.
  • Demonstrated, previous experience delivering cost savings and spend rationalisation.
  • Well-developed negotiation skills in an IT/technology category underpinned by detailed contract knowledge, including complex service scope and SLAs.
  • Have a good understanding of license models of common IT software such as Microsoft and SAP.
  • Experience in working in a high-performance, fast-pace organization where individual performance is not only measured at the individual but also at the team level.
  • Self-motivated and result focused with a detailed and methodical approach.
  • Strong leadership, influencing and interpersonal skills.
  • High level of communication to support cross-departmental and stakeholder liaison.
  • Think strategically and identify opportunities for improvement.
