Description & Requirements

No restraints. No limitations. We don’t simply push boundaries. We completely rethink them. McLaren Automotive exists to create breath-taking performance road cars.

With innovation at the core of all we do, every challenge starts with the same question. How can we do it better? This restless spirit runs right through McLaren Automotive. And the search for perfection is evident in everything we do.

Purpose of Role

As a Quality Engineer specialising in the training of Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), you will engage with multiple stakeholders across the business to ensure a streamlined approach to the application of GD&T through engineering design and component drawing release. This will have a direct impact on the Manufacturing concepts and Quality performance of our future products.

This function is crucial to integrating major vehicle systems; its outputs provide a common understanding of the GD&T language and a “right first time” approach to preventing problems before they happen.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Deliver a structured GD&T training programme for cohorts within the McLaren Automotive business and its key stakeholders.
  • Management of internal training guides and standards for both McLaren FT&A (2D/3D)/GD&T application and the 1D McLaren Tolerance Calculator.
  • Ensure Feature Tolerancing and Annotation (FT&A)/GD&T in released designs is in accordance with BS:8888 ISO:1101 and supports the vehicle assembly strategy and tolerance management concept in context to downstream manufacturing processes.
  • Facilitate the “McLaren GD&T Committee” to ensure the business stays up to date with the latest changes in the automotive industry.
  • Work cross-functionally to develop and define dimensional control concepts with the team. Each concept is used to evaluate the product and process design capability against critical quality targets for major vehicle systems, including both exterior and interior.
  • Provide support in generating datum strategies at a local level (using GD&T), which sets the overall engineering assembly concept. This is required for assembly jigs, fixtures, and measurement plans.
  • Support development of overall vehicle concepts to ensure previous lessons learned are raised, thus finding optimal design solutions.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the various component manufacturing processes with respect to best practice tooling philosophies.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Degree in mechanical / automotive engineering or similar or equivalent experience in a similar role.
  • CATIA V5
  • GD&T and its application to the BS8888 standard
  • 8D or Practical Problem Solving (PPS) ability
  • Methodical approach to work with strong analytical skills
  • Self-starter capable of using initiative
  • New product development experience in the Automotive Industry
  • The application of best practice location strategies for a range of components/assemblies, materials and manufacturing processes covering composites, polymer mouldings, pressed steel/aluminium sheet metal, castings, and laminates
  • Basic understanding of jig and fixture concepts
  • Basic understanding of SPC, statistics and process capabilities
  • An understanding of 3DCS Tolerance Analysis software or similar experience would be beneficial
Personal Attributes
  • As the GD&T Trainer, you will naturally have an aptitude to learn and develop the technical ability of other employees throughout the McLaren Automotive business.
  • We work in a fast-paced environment so the ability to act under pressure with calmness, clarity of thought, and decisive authority is crucial.
  • You may be required to travel to off-site development facilities, within the UK and throughout Europe, therefore a flexible approach to travel is required.
