Purpose of Role

  • Lead the team responsible for the design and engineering of Advanced Composites systems across all McLaren Automotive vehicle lines.
  • Work within a matrix organization with direct report line to the Senior Manager - Body-In-White whilst delivering towards project-based goals set by Vehicle Line management leaders on multiple parallel projects.
Principal Accountabilities

Lead your team to deliver all Advanced Composites systems in line with targets, KPI’s and milestones set by the McLaren Development Process and Vehicle Line management leaders, on multiple vehicle programmes with emphasis on:

  • Design and Engineering integrity to exceed quality, performance and commercial goals.
  • Investment Budget - including internal and outsourced labour, tooling costs and supplier or internal D&D investment.
  • Innovation to define future component and system technical strategies and associated technologies roadmaps. Where necessary, identify research topics, associated budgets, resource, partners and funding streams.
  • Timing to ensure robust delivery at every step of the design and development process.
Problem Solving:

  • Make sure the 24-hour time upper limit standard is not exceeded every time an Advanced Composites engineering concern manifests itself.
  • Engineering problems must be solved in line with the McLaren practical problem-solving system including a robust understanding and dissemination of lesson learnt that are aimed at avoiding problem repetition and continuously improving our cars and the Company as a whole
People and Performance:

  • Lead and develop your team to meet and exceed the goals set by the business.
  • Maximize your performance and development as an individual as well as that of all individuals within your team.
  • Drive delivery of project via strategic outsourced resource partners
  • Define or Influence the selection of the appropriate design and development partners
  • Develop the relationship, framework and ultimately the capability of your external partners including a clear performance management process.

  • Promote, implement and support a simultaneous approach to Body Styling, Design and Engineering where early engagement from all stakeholders is maximised in order to avoid late changes and delays in the overall process. This includes internal stakeholders like Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, other Vehicle Engineering teams, Service/After sales, marketing, etc. and external stakeholders like suppliers, outsourced resource partners, etc.
  • As the key individual for subject of matter expertise, make sure your team works closely with support functions like supply chain team to monitor current supplier performance and develop future supply strategies.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A high level of technical knowledge & experience of lightweight Advanced Composites component & system design, test & production
  • Expertise in robust and efficient problem solving.
  • Strong knowledge of Advanced Composites manufacturing processes and supply chain
  • CATIA V5 2D/3D skills preferred with strong GD&T application experience
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products
  • Experienced in OEM or tier one component, system or commodity delivery
  • Component & system design within an APQP or similar framework including FMEA, component planning and PPAP
  • Engineering Degree 2:1 or above
