Purpose of Role
This is an exciting role within McLaren Automotive. You'll lead the team responsible for the engineering of advanced composite and metallic systems and selection development and analysis of metallic materials and coatings across all McLaren Automotive vehicle lines. You will work within a matrix organization with direct report line to the Head of Body-In-White Engineering whilst delivering towards project-based goals set by Vehicle Line leadership on multiple parallel projects.
Principal Accountabilities

As the Engineering Manager, you will lead your team to deliver all advanced materials systems and technologies in line with targets, KPI’s and milestones set by the McLaren Development Process and Vehicle Line management leaders, on multiple vehicle programmes with emphasis on:

  • Innovation to define future component and system technical strategies and associated technologies roadmaps. Where necessary, identify research topics, associated budgets, resource, partners and funding streams.
  • Working with our Advanced Engineering team to define which projects will be the focus of our future car development to enable McLaren to maintain it’s leadership of the power to lightweight attribute
  • Delivery of Carbon Fibre and Metallic technology roadmaps to deliver new and innovative solutions for our vehicles
  • Design and Engineering integrity to exceed quality, performance, and commercial goals.
  • Timing to ensure robust delivery at every step of the research, design, and development process.

Problem Solving:

  • Ensure timely resolution of any concern raised relating to composites or metallic materials.
  • Engineering problems must be solved in line with the McLaren practical problem-solving system including a robust understanding and dissemination of lesson learnt that are aimed at avoiding problem repetition and continuously improving our cars and the Company as a whole

People and Performance:

  • Lead and develop your team to meet and exceed the goals set by the business
  • Maximize your performance and development as an individual as well as that of all individuals within your team.
  • Drive delivery of projects via strategic outsourced resource partners
  • Define or influence the selection of the appropriate design and development partners
  • Develop the relationship, framework and ultimately the capability of your external partners including a clear performance management process.
  • Teamwork and collaboration
Promote, implement and support a simultaneous approach to Body Styling, Design and Engineering where early engagement from all stakeholders is maximised in order to avoid late changes and delays in the overall process. This includes internal stakeholders like Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, other Vehicle Engineering teams, Service/After sales, marketing, etc. and external stakeholders like suppliers, outsourced resource partners, etc.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A high level of technical knowledge & experience of lightweight advanced composites and metallic material component & system design, test & production
  • Expertise in robust and efficient problem solving.
  • Strong knowledge of advanced composites manufacturing processes and supply chain
  • Strong test and analysis expertise
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products
  • Experienced in OEM or tier one component, system, or commodity delivery
  • Engineering Degree 2:1 or above
