Purpose of Role

As the EMC specialist within the McLaren Automotive Electronic Systems and Controls team, you will be responsible for the specification, design , development and certification of EMC related aspects of future McLaren road cars (at both a component and vehicle level).

Working closely with the McLaren Automotive Body Electronics and Electric Driveline teams (and their associated supplier base) , you will lead the EMC attribute development and sign-off for multiple vehicle projects.
The position requires a highly motivated and hands-on team player with exceptional attention to detail, diligence, and a positive attitude. The fast-paced development provides a challenging environment suited to an engineer who can quickly develop skills in new areas and liaise with other engineering teams within a multidisciplinary environment. Our customers expect high standards, and we require staff capable of meeting such demands.


Principal Accountabilities

·        Develop and maintain McLaren standards defining the EMC and Electrical performance requirements (incl. test methods, test levels and limits) for whole vehicle and the associated electrical/ electronic components

·    Develop and maintain McLaren standards for vehicle design practices relating to EMC aspects, including LV/HV grounding, cable layouts and routings, component locations and installations.

·    Develop and maintain McLaren standards defining the EMC certification requirements and test process for worldwide markets

·    Support vehicle design and testing activities for multiple projects to ensure a robust EMC performance from both a certification and a customer facing attribute perspective (e.g., radio system performance, display interference)

·    Suppliers point of contact for EMC related topics

·    Lead EMC testing during vehicle development phases

·    Lead EMC certification testing

·    Lead all aspects of the future technology roadmap relating to EMC topics

     Support definition and design of harness and power distribution designs for optimum EMC performance

·    As an EMC specialist with McLaren Automotive you will be responsible for ensuring successful delivery of the following:


·     EMC related engineering standards and technical specifications

·     EMC performance testing (vehicle level) during development phases

·     EMC pre-certification and formal certification testing (vehicle level)

·    Monitoring and supporting supplier component level testing (ensuring system interaction risks are understood and addressed as required)  

·    Quality concern investigation and resolution

·    Generation and execution of Design validation plans

Resource forecasting and costing (facilities, hardware etc

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

·        Degree in a relevant engineering subject such as Electronics or Physics.

·    Strong technical project management skills with proven evidence of decision making and accountability is essential.  It is core to the success of our business that these primary roles have the required level of leadership and motivation to succeed.

·     Previous experience of OEM or tier one delivery for EMC related aspects

·    Good commercial awareness to maintain a focus on cost, profit, quality, and risk.

·    Supplier management, comfortable with challenging when required

·    Strong interpersonal skills

·    Background in low volume, high performance sports or racing cars preferred.

·    Proven experience in EMC design methodology at both a vehicle and component level

·    Detailed knowledge and experience in implementing grounding and harness schemes for EMC integrity

·    Knowledgeable in the impact of EMC issues on vehicle systems and associated performance

·    Experience in design and implementation of EMC containments (e.g., addition of ferrites)

·    Direct experience in EMC vehicle level certification testing

·    Documentation of Technical Specifications, DVP, Timing Plans, Minutes and Actions of Meetings.

·    Experience of the Systems Development Lifecycle (V Model).

·    Ability to produce formal documentation to a professional standard.

·    Organised, systematic and understand the process of fault finding.

·    Ability to effectively manage time between multiple projects.

·    EMC certification standards and process for worldwide markets

·    Electronic controller design best practice for EMC related performance

·    Experienced in the use of test equipment for EMC evaluation

·    CAD experience preferred (CATIA)
