Purpose of Role
Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for vehicle packaging, detailed design, integration & release maturity of the Fuel Systems on all vehicle programs; from concept to production ensuring the design supports system technical specifications. Interfacing with other engineering Teams, taking responsibility for integration of Fuel system designs with Powertrain and other Vehicle systems. Working within as part of a highly dynamic and flexible team alongside Engineers and technical experts, responsible for designing to high quality standard and taking ownership of design and delivery of components and subsystems. Influencing concepts and delivering the application of existing & new technology on exciting new products.
Principal Accountabilities

  • Fuel system design ownership of Fuel System including:

    • Fuel Tank Assembly (including internals and ancillaries)
    • Fuel Tank Retention & Mounting
    • Fuel Pipes (Delivery, EVAP and Purge Pipes & Hoses)
    • Evaporative System Including Charcoal Canister
    • Fuel Filler Assembly

  • Work alongside system project engineers to package aforementioned systems on new powertrain architecture and installations, progressing concepts through to executing detailed designs for prototype and production release, vehicle integration and manufacture.
  • Understands and supports the package constraints for the components.  Designing in context of the vehicle package to ensure a robust whole vehicle solution.
  • Working with suppliers, Concept teams & DMU to ensure components and systems meet technical and package targets and to deliver detailed designs on time to predetermined quality, cost and weight targets, within DFM requirements.
  • Ensures design solutions are optimised to support vehicle assembly & service requirements
  • Works with other team members to develop component and system specifications.
  • Works with the other designers and the component supplier to achieve efficient, innovative and lightweight designs.
  • Ensure design solutions deliver systems that meet attribute targets in NVH, thermal, durability, serviceability & performance related attributes (e.g., pressure, flow, emissions).
  • Understands fuel system & component requirements.
  • Ensures the components interface seamlessly to the wider car including structural interfaces & body panels (where applicable).
  • Support cross functional design reviews
  • Establish and control design release, ECR/ECN in line with ETRS requirements
  • Working understanding of standards applicable to design process for respective fuel system and sub-components
  • Support Technical Specification, DFMEA & DVP activities.
  • Support preparation and presentation of material for external and internal project reviews.
  • BOM definition and management to include identifying cost & weight reduction initiatives to deliver targets.
  • Review and manage the opening and closure of design concerns.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Very Strong CATIA V5 proficiency with min 3+ years using CATIA for component design and integration.
  • 2D & 3D skills with GD&T application experience.              
  • 3 years experience of powertrain component packaging on vehicle, detailed design, integration & release.
  • Working knowledge of fuel systems and vehicle attributes.
  • Experience in working with PHEV (pressurized) fuel tanks a plus.
  • Experience in Mechanical Powertrain component design, packaging & release preferred.
  • Knowledge of materials & manufacturing processes employed in Fuel systems and components preferable.
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products.                                       
  • Experienced in OEM or tier one component & System design preferred.
  • Understanding of component & system design within an APQP or similar framework including FMEA, component planning and PPAP preferred.
  • Knowledge of Project management processes and/or within SAP a bonus                             
  • Good-quality Mechanical or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above, or equivalent qualifications.
Personal Attributes

  • 3 years’ automotive design, development & delivery experience
  • Proven track record of component & system engineering (experience with the detailed systems above preferred)
  • A background in relevant powertrain attributes advantageous
  • Adopts a creative & thoughtful approach to engineering problem solving, (e.g. 8D or PPS) with good attention to detail
  • Excellent feasibility assessment skills including design for manufacture and DFMEA input
  • Experience in component release management and problem solving
  • Ability to communicate clearly with design and development groups
  • Well organised, delivery focused – with demonstrable record of on-time delivery
  • Good team skills, willingness to work cross-functionally 
  • An ability to deliver under pressure with an appetite for success
