What to Expect
The DevOps Engineer is responsible for enabling fast, safe and reliable delivery of software and infrastructure across Azure and AWS. The DevOps Engineer will apply DevOps and SRE principles to build scalable platforms, automated pipelines and robust operational practices. You’ll partner with product teams to ship frequently with confidence, while embedding policy guardrails and cost effective operations in line with McLaren’s Cloud Governance Policy (MBP.01.020).
What You'll Do
− Cloud Platforms: Microsoft Azure (enterprise workloads) and AWS (vehicle/development and selected services).
− Delivery Tooling: CI/CD with GitHub Actions / Azure DevOps; artifact repositories; release automation and deployment strategies (blue/green, canary).
− Compute & Orchestration: Containers & Kubernetes (AKS/EKS), serverless (Azure Functions/Lambda), VM patterns.
− Infrastructure as Code: Terraform (preferred), Bicep/ARM, CloudFormation where appropriate.
− Observability & Reliability: Azure Monitor, CloudWatch, Prometheus/Grafana, OpenTelemetry; SLIs/SLOs and error budgets.
− Security & Governance: IAM/roles, Azure Policy, AWS SCPs, secrets management (Key Vault/Secrets Manager/KMS) aligned to MBP.01.020.
− Collaboration: Work closely with Cloud Services teammates (including the DevOps Engineer role noted in org design), Cyber Security, Enterprise Architect, and product/delivery squads.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
− Platform Automation & IaC - Design, codify and maintain reusable infrastructure modules and environment blueprints (networking, identity, storage, compute, data and observability) for Azure and AWS, enforcing consistency, security and cost controls.
− CI/CD & Release Engineering - Build and operate CI/CD pipelines (build, test, security scan, deploy, rollback) with progressive delivery patterns to maximise deployment frequency and quality while minimising risk.
− Kubernetes & Runtime Operations - Engineer container platforms (AKS/EKS) with GitOps tooling, autoscaling, secrets management, policy admission controls and robust backup/restore paths to achieve defined SLOs
− Observability & SRE - Implement end-to-end observability (logs, metrics, traces), define SLIs/SLOs, run capacity and performance tuning, and drive blameless postmortems and problem eradication to raise reliability over time.
− Security & Compliance by Design - Bake in identity, least privilege, encryption, image hardening, vulnerability remediation and policyascode guardrails consistent with Cloud Governance
MBP.01.020.
− FinOps & Cost Optimisation - Monitor and optimise run ratethrough rightsizing, reservations/savings plans, storage lifecycle rules and demand management, working with Cloud Services
leadership.
− Collaboration & Standards - Partner with the Enterprise Architect and Enterprise Cloud Lead to align patterns with reference architectures; contribute to the Cloud Services community of practice and internal standards library.
− Service Management & DR - Contribute to incident/change practices, on call rotations and DR testing, ensuring automation and documentation keep pace with platform evolution.
IMPACT
− DORA metrics: Deployment frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate, mean time to restore (MTTR).
− Reliability: SLO attainment for critical services; error budget usage.
− Automation: % infrastructure under IaC; pipeline success and availability; % config drift eliminated.
− Security/Compliance: Vulnerability SLA adherence; policy violations trend; secrets rotation compliance per Cloud Governance.
− Cost: Unit cost per workload/environment trending to target (showback/chargeback readiness).
KEY STAKEHOLDERS
− Internal: Head of Cloud Services, Enterprise Cloud Lead, Enterprise Architect, Cyber Security, Service Delivery, Data Platforms & Analytics, Digital/R&D, Enterprise Architecture Forum.
− External: Cloud providers (Microsoft, AWS), managed servicepartners and tooling vendors.
What You'll Bring
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
− Hands on experience with Azure and AWS core services (compute, network, storage, IAM), and with Azure DevOps/GitHub Actions or equivalent CI/CD tooling
− Strong IaC skills (Terraform preferred; Bicep/ARM/CloudFormation advantageous) and Kubernetes operations on AKS/EKS (clusterlifecycle, autoscaling, ingress, service mesh/policy, secrets).
− Proficiency in scripting (Bash/PowerShell/Python) and automation workflows; familiarity with GitOps(Argo CD/Flux) and container packaging (Docker, Helm/Kustomize).
− Observability at scale: Azure Monitor/Log Analytics, CloudWatch, Prometheus/Grafana, Open Telemetry; capacity planning and perf tuning.
− “Secure by default” mindset: identity & access, key management (Key Vault/KMS/Secrets Manager), image hardening, vulnerability management, Azure Policy/SCP/OPA Gatekeeper.
− Practical exposure to FinOps levers and cloud cost reporting; experience in incident/problem management and blameless postmortems.
− Team player with strong comms and stakeholder skills; comfortable pairing with developers, platform engineers and security.
Essential Functional / Technical Skills:
− Degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Engineering or related field.
− Certifications welcome: Azure Administrator/DevOps Engineer, AWS SysOps/DevOps Engineer, CKA/CKAD, HashiCorp Terraform Associate.
− ITIL Foundation beneficial for service and change integration
