Description & Requirements

Background

No restraints. No limitations. We don’t simply push boundaries. We completely rethink them. McLaren Automotive exists to create breath-taking performance road cars.

With innovation at the core of all we do, every challenge starts with the same question. How can we do it better? This restless spirit runs right through McLaren Automotive. And the search for perfection is evident in everything we do.

Purpose of Role

  • Support the Design Team to “create breath-taking products that tell the visual story of their function”.
  • To create and release production-feasible, aesthetically-optimised surfaces that maintain design intent and are to a high quality of surface execution. Surfaces should meet engineering hardpoints and delivered to specified McLaren standards and attributes. All data to be released in time to support component production schedules and gateways.
  • To assist the creative process by interpreting 2D sketches into 3D data for design iteration and approval using CAS software in the concept and A class phases.
Principal Accountabilities

  • Technical biased role to create surfaces according to McLaren digital surfacing guidelines, standards and release procedures
  • To utilise CAS software to generate both conceptual designs utilising subD modelling tools as well as production data using Bezier and nurbs.
  • These standards are found in: http://malweb/DesignDept/Styling/Design%20Standards/
  • Surfaces to be checked prior to release for position, tangency, curvature and deviation from engineering/scan (SR1 - SRF)
  • Surfaces to be checked for minimum radii add assumed tool direction (SR1 - SRF)
  • Check Surfaces for centreline tangency when centreline is not at y0
  • Attend lead CAS Designer Task Allocation meeting
  • Receive Engineering hardpoint update notification from Studio Engineer with support from Lead CAS Designer
  • Retrieve input from Design with support from Lead CAS Designer
  • Maintain up to date reference data model for Zone (Alias)
  • Update zonal data daily for Persistent Digital Model
  • Send CAS surfaces to studio engineering for hard point verification as per McLaren standard.
  • Convert and send milling data to clay modellers if needed and with support from Lead CAS Designer
  • Provide any reference CAS information (e.g. points) to assist clay development
  • Support the preparation of CAS models for regular design and surface reviews
  • Escalate any conflicts of input to Lead CAS Designer
  • Prepare surface quality review files as needed
  • Attend project meetings and engineering reviews as requested
  • Support Lead CAS Designer to ensure Quality execution and gateway timings are met.
  • Support Lead CAS Designer in the Virtual to Digital development pipeline within the CAS organisation
  • Provide any reference CAS information (e.g. points) to assist Physical / Digital development
  • Fill in SharePoint document to declare that the final surface is ready for release
  • Apply colours to CAS surfaces to show which surface changes have taken place according to McLaren standards.
  • Assign shaders to CAS data in line with VRED / UE4 pipeline in MSL
  • Notify Lead CAS Designer that task is complete
  • Track SharePoint document releases to declare that the final surface is ready for release
  • Ability to work closely with studio Engineers, designers, concept engineers, aero and CMD
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Create SR0 initial theme surfaces in using subD tools to support feasibility studies to 'sketch' tolerances
  • Create Pre-SR1 surfaces using subD tools of selected themes for proportion approval to 'sketch' tolerances
  • Create SR1 surfaces of selected theme using subD tools for engineering feasibility to 'sketch' tolerances as a jelly mould.
  • Create SRM surfaces for aero mule study using both subD tools and nurbs modelling to 'concept' tolerances with curves-on-surface for shut-gaps
  • Create SR2 surfaces for first CAD models to 'concept' tolerances with first returns and fillets.
  • Create SR3 surfaces for Design Director approval to 'pre-production' tolerances
  • Create SRF surface releases for production releases to 'production intent' tolerances
Personal Attributes

  • Challenge Mind-set: “Keep a calm head, see the situation as a challenge not a threat.”
  • Act with Integrity: “Put the team first & represent those who have gone before and all those who will follow.”
  • High Performance Environment: “Find incremental ways to continually improve.”
  • No Egos: “Sweep the sheds and give each other the benefit of the doubt.”
