Purpose of Role

As the Senior Design Engineer in the Exterior Trim team, you will work with cutting edge products having opportunity to create, deliver and introduce your own ideas.

Reporting to the Principal Engineer for Exterior Trim you will be able to push and develop your engineering capability, influencing and technically leading future exterior trim design across multiple vehicle development projects.

·         With a direct impact on vehicle performance, styling and perceived quality in the market, you will be expected to create and deliver innovative designs and ideas exceeding the current benchmark.

·         Be the Exterior Trim Design Engineering lead for design feasibility, detailed design and development aspects at component, sub-system and system level from ‘cradle to grave’

·         In parallel you will be expected, where required, to co-ordinate the design workload for a team of direct or indirect Design Engineers assigned to Body Exteriors.

·         Be responsible for attending and supporting meetings/reviews and reacting to any issues relevant to Body Exterior to best serve your customer groups such as Styling, Concept and Project Management teams.

·         Liaise and work cross-functionally with rest of the design and engineering community, suppliers, manufacturing engineering and R&D team.

This is a role that will push you to develop your engineering capability whilst being confronted with technical questions daily with the exposure to other areas of the business, particularly at the Concept, Design and Development Phase. The reward to this challenge is the opportunity to have a major influence on the final product with direct input into the design of exterior componentry, predominantly in polymer materials.

Principal Accountabilities

Clearly demonstrate ability to ensure simultaneous engineering approach to develop right first time designs including: -

·         Body packaging, concept studies and detailed design, including sizing calculations and use of CAD / CAE to create viable sections

·         Lead and support of design activities carried out in-house and at suppliers if required​

·         Build support (prototype and production)​

·         Ensure components and assemblies adhere to applicable industry and business standards​

·         Supporting problem solving activities during virtual and physical builds.​

·         Assess all engineering prototypes to determine any associated issues or risks, mitigating when, and where found.​

·         Research whether the design is feasible, functional and cost-effective​.

·         Estimate cost limits and budgets for new designs.

·         Represent the department in design reviews and during test and development activities if required​

·         Design components to the lowest feasible weight​

·         Ensure components and assemblies adhere to applicable internal, industry, business and where applicable legislative standards and requirements.

·         Co-ordinate own design work to deliver timely design releases and meeting all design for manufacture input from supplier(s).​

·         Develop and specify GD&T data set on CAD models or drawings, taking into account all inputs from parts suppliers, assembly processes and dimensional management studies​.

·         Creating presentation material for Design Reviews ​

·         Producing detailed manufacturing drawings ​

Maintain and manage engineering records and designs

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Catia v5 experience preferred.
  • Design and development experience on automotive products
  • Good understanding of latest Automotive manufacturing and assembly processes, feasibility and technology
  • Robust understanding of the complete product lifecycle (concept-delivery)
  • Strong interpersonal skills – ability to communicate to all levels of the business including external partners
  • Good understanding and application of GD&T
  • Knowledge of development tools, such as DFMEA and DVP.

Educated to Degree level in suitable Engineering discipline
